Karen completed a Yin Yoga intensive with the acclaimed, Norman Blair. www.yogawithnorman.co.uk Offering a Yin yoga class where breath awareness is central to that which is also going on in the anatomical or physical body. Yin Yoga is calming, and deeply nourishing, It is a gentle practice which has its origins in Chinese traditions. Holding poses for 5 minutes allows hydration of the fascia, the connective tissue which surrounds all muscles, ligaments and bone structure allowing for ease of movement and flexibility. Many find their way to a yoga practice as a way to find release from the effects of stress within the physical body, the emotional body , the mind body and the spiritual body. We are not separated by these aspects, one has a knock on effect to the other.
Stress has become synonymous with living In The 21st Century, being chased by dinosaurs has now been replaced with running for a bus or misplacing our devices to someone cutting us up on the motorway. We juggle un-met deadlines, keeping up with social demands, and our peers to managing bills, raising and caring for a family, health matters and workplace issues such as bullying, stressful interactions, job security and even harassment.
These all leave untold negative impacts upon the mind resulting in sleepless nights, dependency upon stimulants, arguments with loved ones and much, much more.
Stress along with depression, anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders are on the increase and a poll from The HSE have seen numbers rise 12.5 million people wee off work due to work related issues between 2016/17. With an ever busy world where pressures to perform, gain results and heighten abilities can result in burnout and in some cases, death.
Never has there been more a need to re-valuate our health and well-being.
An all parliamentary group was set up in June 2018,
'Yoga in Society', to bring to the fore the positive benefits of long term benefits of Yoga in health, (physical and mental), The workplace, (wellbeing and Teamwork), The criminal justice (criminal and police) and education (students and teachers). We are all inter-linked and dependant not independent of one another.
We can all find solace from this busy world we live in, returning to the stillness within, The Stilling Place. Creating a mindful movement through a yoga practice or stillness through meditation. enhanced with Reiki treatments that may recalibrate, re-centre and recharge body, mind, and soul.
Somatics is the use of the brain to change the body. It is an effective system of movement for relaxing muscles. Through a set of guided classes somatics has the ability to help with a number of conditions such as -
Neck, back and shoulder pain.
Hip, knee and foot pain, poor posture, whiplash, accident trauma, RSI, tension headaches , hyper-kyphosis, sciatica, frozen shoulder to name but a few.
Somatics changes the landscape of the internal structure for better movement and freedom regardless of age, fitness level, or conditions. It is a self aware set of exercises mostly completed lying down, which enables an individual to explore a new way of moving which triggers a re-patterning of neural-plasticity, much like muscle memory when playing an instrument.
The importance of somatic exercises is the 'why', movement focuses on feel rather than form. Remember as a child if someone asked you where is your nose, you wouldnt say, between my eyes and above my mouth, you would point to it and touch it. We need to be able to feel into the body before we can change how it moves.
The class starts with a soma scan, lay on the floor with blankets, so that the journey we take within informs the body and becomes the barometer whilst moving and feeling into the exercises.
It is the self sensing, self modifying, self healing, self monitoring and self nurturing elements of the inner experience of the self. It is the experiences of the outer body where experiences and events imprint upon us.
If we only picture ourselves as one dimensional we do ourselves a dis-service to the very core we are created and move from. We are the sensing body, the feeling body, the thinking body, and the energetic body.
The science bit - slow movements allow for the neocortex part of the brain to absorb what is occurring so that it is remembered and accepted. It is also within this slow and deliberate action that healing can occur.
Self acceptance is a great gift we offer ourself.
Thomas Hanna, Ph.D was the founder of the field of Somatics. He used the Greek word, 'Soma' in the 1970's. He was a Feldenkrais practitioner. He went on to study neurology at The University of Miami Medical School and over 20 years developed what is now known as, 'Hanna Somatic Education. (HSE).
